Until a couple of years ago, I never knew Google was storing all of my search queries and sites visited in perpetuity.

When I found those account settings, a chill went up my spine and I turned them off pretty damned quick.

As I understand it, while you can delete your own search history (so that it no longer appears in something that the Google toolbar as history) this does not remove the data stored on Google’s backend – the IP address is still correlated with the search string, and that information is ‘anonymized’ by removing the last set of numbers in the IP address.

  3. Atleast I find it good..
I dont remember how many Google services I have signedup and now I have a
admin space from where I can see and control all my stuff associated with Google.

  4. Christopher says:

Oh, and don’t get me wrong – there is real value in the service, but value that can be substantially enhanced. A name change is one element of this; more far-reaching alterations to the control that Google gives you over the data that you feed them is another.

Thank you for the great post!

  6. Jack Yan says:

Love the idea of it; more concerned by the errors that frequently pop up for the few services I use. I hope they’re glitches, but you’d think that 18 months later, they’d have sorted the counting issues they have in Google Dashboard.
